You are welcome to come to our CHAT meeting tomorrow night where we will speak about CHAT's advocacy for proper and standard practices for resolving discrepancies in appraisals and other pressing Road Home issues, including the shortfall in funds.

with a low-balled appraisal a couple of weeks ago, and would love to
hear any suggestions on what our next move should be. They did over
the course of about eight months move from about $125,000 up to
$178,000, but after that second offer we had an actual appraisal done
which came in at $250,000. When presented with the appraisal the
adviser claimed that it didn't matter what the appraisal said our
home was valued at before Katrina, that they were only going to OK
going up to a maximum of 20% more than the last Road Home offer no
matter what the property actually appraised at. In fact, the adviser
actually told us to try to get our appraiser to doctor up her
appraisal such that it would come in at that 20%-higher-than- the-
offer figure and submit that rather than submitting the $250,000
figure, telling us that they would accept that number. She said she
wouldn't submit the actual appraisal unless we absolutely insisted,
and advised us not to do so because she said "who knows what will
happen to the files that we don't accept right away." We took our
appraisal with us and left without their being any official record of
our having challenged the $178,000 figure at her suggestion, but
we're not even considering doing what she said and trying to get a
licensed appraiser to falsify an appraisal just to stay within 20% of
their figure.
I've sent an email about this to my State Rep., J.P. Morrell, but
haven't heard anything back from him just yet. We don't know if we
should go ahead and submit the actual appraisal for $250,000 and just
take our chances that our file might just get thrown in a box
somewhere and forgotten. Luckily right now we can handle the SBA
loan payments, so we're inclined to want to try to wait them
out...but we don't really know what our next step should be. I'd
love to hear any suggestions from anyone who may have had the same
type of thing happen to them.
