[FoCHAT] CHAT: 2 Essential Letters Need to Be Sent By 1000's Who Care About Louisiana; If you have time, more

If you care about Louisiana being treated fairly like other states and can do only one thing to help its recovery now, please write a letter to two US Senators or send two emails today as described below.

Please also tell all your friends, neighbors, and relatives to do the same, even if they don’t live in Louisiana.

Senator Landrieu's subcommitte which held hearings about the Road Home Program on Thursday can receive written comments put into the record for about two weeks, or through June 5th.

If by some miracle we can get thousands of letters in, it will help Senator Landrieu in her very difficult job of getting more money for the program out of Congress.

Please pass this along to everyone and every organization, group, you can think of. Sen. Landrieu needs our help so that she can help us.

As Connie Uddo of St. Paul’s Beacon of Hope said at the Wash. DC Senate hearing about the RHP, a 9-year-old asked her mom when visiting to help in a devastated New Orleans neighborhood, “When are we going back to the US?”

Frank Silvestri, CHAT Co-Chair, who also testified in says that Sen. Landrieu really wants to help us and needs to hear from thousands so she can tell her colleagues. He testified that “Congress’ help is urgently needed to finish the job, help improve the Road Home program and the hundred and twenty thousand still stranded on it.”

Congress decides whether the shortfall is mostly coverend or not. So write to Sens. Landrieu and Stevens of the Sen. Subcommittee on Disaster Recovery

Tell them we need the extra money for the RHP and fair grants.

Even if you are not a Road Home applicant or got your grant, please write!

If Congress doesn’t cover the shortfall, money will be taken from other urgent needs for infrastructure, schools, hospitals etc.

If you are an applicant, you can also tell them your story of waiting for RHP $.

A form letter and addresses for the two US Senators are below or at
  http://chat.thinknola.com

Isn’t Louisiana part of the US, as much as any other state?

It is meaningless for federal officials to blame shortfall on the RHP covering wind damage

  Louisiana is being shortchanged!

LRA asked for $2 B more during planning of the RHP but this extra amount was denied

Miss. gives homeowners grants for wind-driven water,
so wind damage in LA should be OK too

Even FEMA said the number of damaged homes in Louisiana was 3 times more than in Mississippi

FEMA also calculated the extent of damage per house in LA as 3 times higher than in MS

LA got only slightly more $ for grants for damaged homes than MS (24% more)

Wind vs. water is a new argument that should have been brought up long ago

Feds. monitoring the RHP under a microscope

Feds. knew & approved all the major rules of the program

Feds. approved deductions for homeowners’ insurance benefits for wind damage.
How could grants have approved subtracting these benefits if applicants can’t get grants for wind damage?

Have a good Memorial Day Weekend and do some good for Louisiana this weekend please. Thank you for your help!

  Re: The Road Home Program

  Dear Senators Landrieu and Stevens,

We thank you, the US Congress, and the American taxpayers very much for your help in the past. The people the Road Home Program was intended to help are proud, hard-working, honest homeowners determined to rebuild their lives. But they have been stretched to the breaking point. Many have come back, many more want to return, but they cannot do it without additional assistance from Congress as soon as possible.

Please help the Louisiana victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita rebuild by providing additional funds to cover the shortfall in the Road Home Program. The storms hit nearly two years ago, the devastation to our state was enormous and very, very little has been done so far.

We need our schools, hospitals, groceries and thousands of other businesses to return, so people can return. We need our infrastructure repaired. We need to be able to afford insurance and electricity and streets that you can drive on without tearing up your car.

But most of all we need the Road Home Program not to run out of money before everyone gets their fair grant. We need the Road Home Program to work faster and better so we can get our grant money before we run out of time.

We want to rebuild, we want to come back.

We know you have not forgotten us, and we appreciate the work of your committee and the help of the Congress in making money available to set up the Road Home Program, but the work has only just begun and the damage is worse than anyone expected. We need the rest of Congress not to forget us.

Please help us and our city come back to America. Thank you.

              Sincerely,

If you can find a little more time to help all of Louisiana by helping to convince the LA legislature to arrange for match money, a little of theirs for much more of Congress’ to cover the RHP shortfall, then please also send these letters as described below.

  Your turn. Please don't delay.

If you have time to write to more than just Senators Landrieu and Stevens, please also send letters as described below to increase the effectiveness of our pleas for more money for the Road Home Program.

We are asking for some of the shortfall to be covered by the LA State Legislators and for them to make an agreement with Congress that the US Congress cover most of it.

Once completed, please send an e-mail (please put State Legislators Request in Subject Line) to chatlra at yahoo.com, giving us the
names of the representatives to whom you have written. Kindly, send an email (please put State Legislators Reply in subject line) with a summary of any informative responses from the legislators to chatlra at yahoo.com. We need to hold our state legislators accountable too.
The Letter (or any variation that you want to make on this).

  May 28, 2007

Honorable (for representative) (or Sen. for senators) NAME OF LEGISLATOR

  Dear Rep. (or Senator):

As a resident of Louisiana, I urge you to vote to work out an agreement with the US Congress for funding the Road Home Program with no more shortchanging. We ask that a small percentage of the state budget surplus go to fund part of the shortfall in the Road Home Program and that the rest of the money for covering the shortfall be provided by Congress.

Whether or not the underestimate of the cost of the Road Home Program was caused by calculations of federal officials, the Louisiana Legislature needs to help get money to applicants immediately
21 months have already passed since the storms! The storm victims yearn to return to some semblance of a normal life. Enough time has been spent living in FEMA trailers and in other difficult living arrangements.

While it is primarily the obligation of the federal government to bear the majority of the costs of the Road Home Program and Louisiana has so many post-storm needs, it is crucial that the state be prepared to step forward with funds for its own citizens. From the Senate Subcommittee Hearing on the Road Home Program, Washington seems to be reluctant to fully fund the shortfall if the State of Louisiana does not show its willingness to bear some of its cost.

Finally, much of the budget surplus was created by spending on the part of flood victims as they replaced their belongings destroyed in the storms. It seems only just that those applying to the Road Home receive the benefit of the budget surplus that they helped to create.

Please write back and tell me if you will support committing a small portion of the state budget surplus to the suffering Road Home applicants to help cover the shortfall. This can serve as encouragement for the federal government to commit much more money to this critical part of the recovery for Louisiana.
